Tom was an ENSIGN during the 1964
world cruise (Operation Sea Orbit) on Enterprise. Part of a detachment of
10 officers and 40 enlisted. They were based at NAS LAKEHURST, N.J. Primary
mission was rescue (plane guard) during air ops. Detachment had three
KAMAN UH-2A "SEASPRITE" all weather helos which were also used for
utility work a personnel transfers to other ships. During the '64 cruise
they lost all three choppers due to accidents and mechanical failures.
They flew replacement helos out to NAS Sigonella, Sicily using C-130's.
later detachment was designated HC-2 during the Vietnam War. The
